From my personal experience it gives me more than just a bit more control.
I've done some offhand shooting, including shooting past 400 yard with M1A and AR, in which I utilize the artillery. The aim is nice and stable and it allows me to aim my weapon for a prolonged period of time, but the recoil and muzzle control is practically zilch.
Prolonged aiming seems to contradict using an AR in close quarters, for which the AFG and thumb over bore grip meant to improve. There is no other stance that can help me put a whole mag (10 round Californian mag) on multiple targets in rapid fire at 25 yards. The recoil and muzzle control is unparreled, my red dot would bounce lightly and come right back on target before my next shot.
And if you ever find yourself in a situation where you rely on your AR for your life, you will either shoot supported from a cover, or shoot on the move, either way you will not hold the weapon offhand for a prolonged period of time.
