I thought the reason air rifle competition to use flat head is for judging score accurately. if use round nose pellet, the judge cannot clearly see your score while the flat head will cut a perfect hole and no mistake to judge your score. flat head is ok for short distance shoot, but not good for long range at all. for long range, round nose, like badminton head, is the best.
flat head do have larger impact (dump more energy on critters with less penetration) than round nose, if hit. round nose can hit two bird in one shot when use PCP with 0.67 gram JSB 177 pellet. I get rid of 22 RWS side cock spring gun long time ago so cannot comment on 22 .
177 vs 22, 177 shoot more flatter, heavy pellet with PCP is deadly for rabbit and squirrel, I shot a rabbit in 20 yard yesterday day time, eye shot (aim eye, hit eye) match head shot consistently 5 x 5 , if gun rested on sand bag. note below two video. US version hw100 limited power vs US version higher power. that is why I use the heaviest JSB match pellet to control pellet speed below 950 fps. also one thing different I do while Pi and Ted do not, I wash, dry and lube all my pellets while they use original pellet from factory. wash and lube increase accuracy and less cleaning. you must use special lube so no dry up on pellet (localized dry up affect accuracy).
