HOUSTON – Three suspects are in custody after two were shot while trying to rob an off-duty police officer and his girlfriend early Sunday in west Houston, police said.
According to the Houston Police Department, Officer J. Johnson was taking in a movie with his girlfriend just after midnight at the Edwards Cinema in the 3700 block of Portsmouth near Weslayan when the incident happened.
Police said it started when the couple was walking back to their vehicle and a silver sedan slowed down next to them. When the car stopped, the front passenger pointed a pistol at the couple and demanded the woman’s belongings.
Johnson then drew his own handgun and fired multiple shots into the sedan, police said. The suspects took off heading east on Portsmouth. The suspect’s pistol was found discarded a short distance away.
Not long after the shooting, the three suspects turned up at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital where two of them had to be treated for gunshot wounds, police said. The wounds do not appear to be life-threatening.
The three suspects were eventually taken into custody, police said.
The case will be investigated by HPD Homicide, Internal Affairs and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
