The 17, 17L, 22, 24, 31, 34, 35, and 37 all use the same frame and slides will swap in and out of either with no modification to either the frame or slide.
Some important notes:
1. Using a non-9mm slide assembly on a 2 pin frame is dangerous. The second pin was added to address stress fractures and frame failures with the higher pressure cartridges.
2. Locking blocks have changed over the years between production runs, calibers, generations, etc. If you are planning of swapping, confirm BEFORE firing that you have a correct locking block in the frame.
3. Ejectors MAY need to be changed. Some are backwards compatible with other cartridges and some are not. If you swap and are having ejection or stovepiping issues, it's a good bet to check the ejector.
4. Barrels, in very specific circumstances (such as using a 17L barrel in a 17), can be swapped between slides. For the sake of keeping things simple, let's just use the inaccurate yet good rule of thumb that barrels should not be mixed with slides of a different models. Easiest example to explain is that the .40 barrels are larger than 9mm barrels. A .40 barrel won't fit in a 9mm slide but a 9mm slide will fit sloppy in a .40 slide - at the very best hurting accuracy and at the worst being potentially dangerous. You also can't always change between models within the same caliber as a 17L barrel will fit into a 17 slide and function, but a 17 barrel won't fit in a 19 slide and function. That's why there are conversion barrels; they address the issue specific to that model to convert to a different caliber - such as a 9mm barrel profiled to the external dimensions of a .40 barrel to function properly in a .40 frame and slide when a 9mm magazine is used. |
