HYANNIS: A Marstons Mills man was arrested after he allegedly shot a man in a hunting incident Monday, according to Barnstable police.
Sean Houle, 47, was charged with unlawful possession of ammunition/primer, carrying a dangerous weapon/spring-loaded knife, unlawful possession of a firearm and careless or negligent use of a weapon causing injury.
Police and Hyannis fire officials responded to a wooded area near Mary Dunn Road shortly before 5 p.m. to reports of a man staggering out of the woods. The victim, a 39-year-old man from Marstons Mills, sustained buckshot wounds to the rear of his neck and shoulder, according fire Lt. Mark Storie and the police statement. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital and was reported in stable condition, Storie said.
The victim was jogging through the woods with his dog on the Barnstable watershed property when he was struck twice by shotgun pellets, police said. The victim was wearing a white shirt, according to police on the scene.
Shotgun deer season runs Dec. 1-13. Hunting is allowed from a half-hour before sunrise to a half-hour after sunset. The sun set around 4:10 p.m. on Monday.
State environmental police and Barnstable police will continue to investigate the incident. Yarmouth police aided in the investigation because it was unknown at first in which town the incident took place. Environmental Affairs spokeswoman Amy Mahler said the investigation was ongoing and there were no further details available.
Houle was being held overnight on $5,000 cash bail at the Barnstable Police Department and was scheduled to be arraigned in Barnstable First District Court on Tuesday morning.
