Your colleague cites a bias "study" with rigged statistics.  The only way to counter that is to cite John Lott's book:  "More guns, less crime".

The liberal's tricks are usual:  Someone publish a "study" using rigged statistics to claim guns are bad, then everybody and the liberal media repeatedly cites the "study", and hoping that a lie repeated 1000 times becomes "truth".  

Just forget about statistics.  Ask your colleague: Why do you want to take away my guns?

辩论和劝服是两回事，看样子你没法劝服你同事。我对辩论没什么兴趣。不知道能不能帮到你多少：
in an ideal world, no one needs a weapon for self-defense. I gave up on that wishful thinking long time ago. in the world I live in, 300 lb stranger could break into a house and beat up a lady looking after her baby for $200 worth of robbery. with some training, I believe I have a chance against a criminal with my agility, precision and composure at the finger tip, which would not be possible otherwise without a firearm. Guns are not going away from America, not in our life time, whether you like it or not, whether you want to admit it or not. Maybe you think convincing people around you to give up firearms is for the greater goodness of everyone. We have at least one thing in common. I want what's good for people around me as well. We just see the world differently. I see a jungle where I'm overpowered often, while teeth and venom are necessary for survival.

If you eliminate guns, there will be no gun crime. I agree. But it is not the point. If you eliminate cars, there will be no car accident. The real question is: are you safer or not if there are guns?

What you should look at is the correlation between guns and violent crime rate (especially murder rate). Such studys show controversial results and there is no conclusive result yet. Generally speaking, there is no obvious correlation between guns and violent crime rate. If guns don't make your life safer or less safe, there is no logic behind the gun ban. Why should we give up our liberty to own guns? just because you don't like guns?
