Brooksville, Florida — Tragedy strikes a family after a pregnant woman is shot in the head. 25-year-old Katherine Hoover died of her injuries early Monday morning. Her baby boy couldn't be saved.
The shooting happened on Suncrest Drive in Brooksville.
Relatives of the shooter told 10 News this was all a terrible accident.
"We feel terrible about the whole thing," said Don DeHayes.
Hernando County Sheriff's deputies say DeHayes' son, William, shot Katherine Hoover in the head Saturday night.
"For the other family, for my son and his family, we just feel bad," DeHayes said. "We can't change it."
Sheriff's investigators say William DeHayes was showing Hoover a .22 caliber revolver.
Don DeHayes says his son accidentally pointed the pistol at her and it went off, the bullet striking her in the head.
"You always have to treat a gun as if it were loaded," said Doug Jackson, co-president of Bill Jackson's Shop for Adventure in Pinellas Park.
"Keep your finger off of the trigger, a gun cannot fire unless your finger's on the trigger," Jackson said.
Hoover died early Sunday morning, her baby boy couldn't be saved last night.
Hernando County Sheriff's office is investigating the shooting as an accident and would not say whether DeHayes will be charged with any crime.
This has left some neighbors skeptical.
"It's very hard to believe it was an accident, especially point blank in the temple, that's hard to understand," said neighbor Josh Hady.
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office told 10 News it is still actively investigating the case.
