The man who is suspected of trying to rob a Fontana police officer's Apple Valley home Wednesday, March 16, prompting the off-duty officer to shoot and kill him, has been identified.
Vincent Avila, 25, of Apple Valley, entered the officer's home on Ochoa Road just before 5:40 a.m., waking the officer in the process, San Bernardino County sheriff's officials said in a news release.
After a struggle, the officer had Avila at gunpoint -- but Avila allegedly ignored repeated commands to show his hands and lie on the floor.
"As the suspect reached into his waistband, the victim shot him in the upper torso," the sheriff's statement said.
Avial died at a local hospital.
The officer wasn't hurt. His name was not released, but a Fontana police spokeswoman said he has worked for that department for eight years.
The Sheriff's Department asked that anyone with additional information call Detective Scott Thies at 909-387-3589. |
