21 Authorized modifications(Strictly limited to theseitems and their statedguidelines)Please note that, during a match, a shooter may berequired to demonstrate that their gun is in compliancewith Division rules by identifying a specificrules clause or published interpretation which authorizesany disputed modification. If the shooter cannotidentify an authorizing rules-clause or publishedinterpretation, the RM shall rule that the modificationis PROHIBITED for Production use and shall movethe shooter to Open Division.
21.1 Internal throating andpolishing to improveaccuracy, reliability andfunction.Because internal modifications are currently verydifficult to enforce, NROI now deems that this clausemeans “INTERNAL modifications which do NOTconflict with other clauses of this appendix are NOWALLOWED.
Special Notes/Clarifications:• See 21.3 for specifics with regard to slides.• See 21.4 for specifics with regard to barrels.• ALL factory safety mechanisms, whether internalor external, must remain functional.• See 22.2 for specifics on external safeties.• Per existing NROI ruling, any “internal” modificationswhich result in a visible change to the externalappearance of the gun when it is in battery REMAINPROHIBITED unless specifically allowed by theplain language herein.
21.2a Slide – refinishing Per existing NROI ruling, cosmetically enhancing thefinish of a slide is already ALLOWED in ProductionDivision, provided that the finish provides no competitiveadvantage.This clause is NOW interpreted to specificallyALLOW refinishing the frame, as well as the slide,subject to the existing constraints on refinishing (cosmeticonly, no competitive advantage).Special Notes/Clarifications:• Any finish which provides a non-cosmetic functionwill be deemed PROHIBITED. 21.2b Milling of slide — only asrequired to insert sightsRemains in effect – a slide may be modifiedspecifically for the purpose of installingsights, and for no other purpose.
21.3 After-market slides andbarrels – provided they are thesame length, con- tour andcaliber as original factorystandard.SLIDES: Current rules remain in effect – Youmay replace the slide with an OFM oraftermarket slide which is of the same length,contour and caliber as the original slide forthat model of gun.BARRELS: Current rules remain in effect - youmay replace the barrel with an OFM oraftermarket barrel which is of the same length,contour and caliber as the original barrel for thatmodel of gun.Special Notes/Clarifications:For purposes of this interpretation, a barrelwithin +/- 0.1” of OFM is “the same length”.Barrels of the same length, contour and caliberbut with different crown profiles areauthorized.
21.4 Grips • For semi-automatic Production guns, grip tape,gripsleeves, checkering, stippling or other texture mayonly be applied in the areas shown in appendixE4. Glue and grit is considered the same asstippling.• Replacement grip panels are allowed providedtheydo not extend below the butt of the gun to form amake-shift magwell.• Revolver grips may be replaced with OFMor aftermarket grips of any shape, profile andsurface texture.Special Notes/Clarifications:• See 22.2, below, for specifics with regard tomodifications on revolver grips.82 USPSA Handgun Rules, February 2014 Edition21.5 Exchange of minor INTERNALcomponents (strikers, sears,springs,connectors/disconnectors, andother wholly-internal parts)INTERNAL parts: This clause is NOWinterpreted to mean that a broad range ofINTERNAL parts may be modified or replaced –either with OFM or aftermarket parts.Special Notes/Clarifications:• Strikers, sears, springs,connectors/disconnectors, and any other partwhich is NOT visible when the gun is in battery isconsidered an INTERNAL part and may bemodified or replaced unless otherwise prohibitedin these provisions (see section 22 for specificprohibitions).21.5 Cont. • Guide rods are considered an “internal part” andmay be modified and/or replaced with OFM orafter-market guide rods even though part of theguide rod is externally visible when the gun is inbattery. 21.6 Exchange of minorEXTERNAL componentsSights, firing pins, firing pin retainers, pins,extractors and ejectors MAY be replaced withOFM or aftermarket parts.Any other components which are externallyvisible may ONLY be replaced with OFM partswhich are offered on the specific model of gunor another approved gun from the samemanufacturer except as specifically clarifiedbelow. Examples of external componentswhich may only be replaced with OFM partsinclude (but are not limited to): magazinereleases, slide stops, thumb safeties andtriggers.The Vanek trigger, much like the Speed Bumptrigger, has an external modification that makesit illegal for Production division. The SpeedBump trigger has the travel screw mounted tothe rear of the trigger and is visible externally,the Vanek trigger, has relocated the pivot pinabout 3/16” above the factory specs, and hasfilled in the original hole with a black materialthat is still visible on inspection.Special Notes/Clarifications:•Barrels are considered “external parts” andare subject to specific restrictions in 21.4 andassociated rulings.•A factory/OFM magazine release whichextends only the length of the magazinerelease may be used. A magazine releasewhich provides a larger surface area (paddles,buttons) may only be used if it is an OFM partavailable on an approved model of gun.•Externally-visible parts from “custom shop”guns will only be considered “OFM parts” ifthe custom-shop gun is on the NROI list ofapproved Production guns.84 USPSA Handgun Rules, February 2014 EditionAPPENDIX D4 — Production Division (Cont.)
21.7 Magazines Prior restrictions on magazines have been lifted.OFM and aftermarket magazines and base-pads maybe used. However, any and all magazines used incompetition, must fit into the USPSA box whileempty and inserted in the handgun as described initem 7 of this appendix. Grip tape and/or skate boardtape are specifically allowed on magazines and basepads.22 Specifically prohibited Please note that the absence of an item in the list ofmodifications and features prohibited modifications MAY NOT be construed tomean a modification is allowed. A modification isonly allowed in Production Division if there is a rulesclause or interpretation which specifically declaresthat it is allowed in the Division.Removing or disabling firing-pin blocks or any otherfactory safety mechanism in Production division isspecifically prohibited.
22.1 Disabling of any externalsafety or externally operatedsafetyRemains in effect – external- and externally operatedsafety mechanisms must remain operable. (nochange)Special Notes/Clarifications:• For purposes of this clause, a “trigger safety” isexternally visible, and must remain operable.• For purposes of this clause, the prohibition on “disabling”means that you may NOT modify an externalsafety mechanism in any way that affects its functionas a safety per the OFM design.• For purposes of this clause, a magazine disconnectis NOT considered a safety mechanism, and may beremoved.Please note that other clauses in the body of the competitionrules require that a “trigger mechanism must,at all times, function safely” (5.1.4), that handgunsmust be “serviceable and safe” (5.1.6) and that theRange Master is the final authority on the definitionof “safety” as it pertains to the mechanism of the gun• (8.1.2.4). Should they be moved toanother division, they will shoot minor for the entire match or sub-minorshould their ammo fail to meet the minimum.— UNLESS a modification is SPECIFICALLY authorized in the rules orSPECIFICALLY authorized in an official, published NROI interpretation, itis considered a PROHIBITED MODIFICATION.
