It's worst of worlds in real life situations. A pistol-caliber carbine is not good for CCW, personal defense or home defense because of its bulky size. It's not good for hunting in most states because of its pistol caliber. It may be fun to shoot but that only occurs in a range. Whatever use anyone can think it would be, I bet there will be a better alternative out there: a handgun or a rifle-caliber carbine.

Better yet, pistol cartridges are already optimized for short barrels, and is also good for suppressed shooting because of the low velocity and heavy bullets.
If California had allowed NFA, I'd definitely go for a suppressed .45acp SBR AR, and get a bump fire stock
Most of police users have automatic variants but most civilian users have semi-auto variants.
That makes a huge difference. However, if you really like one, just go ahead and get one for yourself.
If I really need to find something that bridges the gap between a handgun and a rifle, I would go for a rifle-caliber pistol. Not sure about whether it's good for home defense or hunting, but I bet it would be much fun to shoot. Again, this is from a civilian viewpoint.
