Things could have gone very badly for a 14 year old who was home alone in
Pueblo, CO.

According to media reports, the teen heard someone in the home and armed
himself.

The 14 year old saw as many as three intruders in the home and opened fire
with a handgun. He told police he believes he hit one of the men, who fled
once they realized they were facing an armed would be victim.

One media report said the home’s backdoor had been kicked in and the power
to the home had been cut.

Police are still searching for the suspects and are keeping an eye on local
hospitals for anyone suffering from a gunshot wound. Police also warn
residents that these suspects may be linked to a rash of other similar
burglaries in the area.

According to Fox 21,

After this case, police also issued a warning to residents of Eastside
Pueblo. A recent rash of burglaries has been reported.

Police said the suspects park in the alley and break in through the back
door. They knock at the front door and when nobody answers, they go to the
back and kick the door in.

我觉得如果小孩喊了一声，说我有枪。罪犯还不跑，那么就算是reasonable response了。

等警察抓住罪犯可以问他一下他听没听到。但是不管罪犯有无听到。如果好人说我喊了，我想法律应该倾向于相信好人的话。

May I Shoot an Intruder?

If someone has invaded your home, and you fear great bodily harm or death, then yes -- the law will generally protect you if you shoot. Outside of those very specific circumstances, the question is a bit too complicated to provide a cut and dried answer.

Self Defense

The law gives everyone the right to defend themselves with a reasonable response. Self-defense is an affirmative defense to a charged violent crime. This means if someone is charged with murder, or assault, they can use self-defense as a legal excuse for the conduct if they can prove it in a court of law.

Any force used against an intruder must usually be proportionate to harm that is reasonably perceived. For example, if a burglar were to enter your bedroom with a yellow banana as a weapon, you would not be justified in shooting them with a 20 gauge shotgun. However, if they were carrying a fake pistol, and you reasonably believed it to be real, you would likely be justified in shooting that intruder.

If you act with a disproportionate response, or believe that banana to be a futuristic space weapon (an unreasonable perception), this becomes what is referred to as imperfect self-defense. This will mitigate the crime you are charged with and usually result in a lesser punishment, though it will not excuse disproportionate response completely.

Duty to Retreat or Stand Your Ground?

In many states, there is a duty to retreat to safety, if possible, before using force. However, in many other states, there are "stand your ground" laws that remove the duty to retreat and allow a person to claim self-defense, even if they made no attempt to flee. However, even in "stand your ground" states there is no license to attack without cause, and the rules vary on the ability to use lethal force.

Castle Doctrine

Again, in some states, a person is privileged to use deadly force against anyone who unlawfully enters their home. In these states, there is no need to take the time to assess the intruder's ability to use deadly or nonlethal force. However, the specifics and applicability vary state to state. If you are uncertain about your state's rule, it may be advisable to consult with an attorney to learn more.

不用，只要相信imminent life-threat or great bodily injury就可以。三个人对一个孩子，电源都切了的惯犯，开枪合理

从WIKI来看，Colorado有城堡法，只要非法进入且正在或意图实施犯罪（不必是伤害）即可持枪自卫

"...any occupant of a dwelling is justified in using any degree of physical force, including deadly physical force, against another person when that other person has made an unlawful entry into the dwelling, and when the occupant has a reasonable belief that such other person has committed a crime in the dwelling in addition to the uninvited entry, or is committing or intends to commit a crime against a person or property in addition to the uninvited entry, and when the occupant reasonably believes that such other person might use any physical force, no matter how slight, against any occupant.

家防自衛, 都是在感到威脅才開槍. 警告射擊, 說明威脅不足夠開槍, 說以不應該開槍.

另外, 在城市裡, 警告開槍往往會打傷無辜的人. 想像一下, 有人威脅你, 你不想向他開槍, 於是向旁邊的無辜者開槍. 美國城市裡房子的牆都當不注9MM之內的子彈, 如果你把你家廳往外兩到三副牆拆掉, 你看見的人大概就是警告開槍可能的受害者.

最好的反应就是先call 911，有功夫的话背一下台词“坏人来了，万不得已会开枪自卫的”，然后一致保持着通话在线，见到匪徒后大叫“stop！back off！stop hurting me！”给911和邻居证人听，如歹徒还不退败就坚决开枪击毙。然后叫911送救护车，挂电话，见到警察啥都不说，只跟律师说话。

痢脖肉/反抢派一定会说，小孩有枪不会也不敢用，或入侵者知道小孩有枪只会被激怒，若发生室内枪战，小孩肯定会被击毙，不如躲起来或乖乖听从入侵者安排不要抵抗
