Is this accuracy normal for standard softpoint hunting rounds？

I am preparing for fall elk hunting. Expected shooting distance is within 300 yd, most likely within 200yd.

I am shooting federal softpoint 150gr .308 win, zeroed at 100yd 2" high. I can consistently get 1.5" 3 shot grouping at 100yd. The problem is that grouping opens up considerably to 6" at 200yd. All shots are fired with bipod support and rear sandbag on shooting bench. Both bolt action Winchester M 70 ultimate shadow and semi auto Browning BAR safari shoot about the same accuracy.

Is this accuracy normal for the standard softppint rounds?

For the real hunting I plan to use premium 165gr federal vital shock trophy copper load. Hope that can be more accurate at longer distance.

你估计打猎的距离是多远？如果300码之内也差不多了吧。还得请有经验的前辈说说。
打猎开不了几枪，买一盒比SP好点的子弹／弹头归零下吧。比如Accubond/E-Tip, Barnes TTSX, Berger VLD Huting等等等,比一盒softpoint也就贵出一个汉堡和可乐的价钱。塑料头和船尾结构对你打远距离会有帮助，bonded结构deep penetration和weight retention也很可靠。如果距离不远，nosler partition打体型大的elk据说还是很牛逼的。

多打打两百码就好了，可能是射手的问题

打猎各种姿势都要练一下，野外没有桌子，趴地上可能只能看到草，看不到猎物

老兄，不是我不想买，308WIN 好蛋坏蛋到处都买不到！唯一Federal Trophy Copper还是运气好排到4盒，得省着点儿，现在先用softpoint练。Also the landowner wants no lead, non toxic load only. Normal partition or bonded design still have lead as components. Any other specific recommendation beside the ones I have now? More importantly, any info on where to buy?

Lead free的俺也只知道Barnes, Nosler/Win E-tip, Hornady GMX Superperformance, 30-06反正是挺好买，有的网站还有折扣。308就祝你好运啦．．．．．．．

Noted. Thanks. Will concentrate mainly on prone, sitting, and kneeling position. Also do you bring a sand sock in the field as rear rest? I don't have good breathing control yet. And without rear rest, it will probably be 3MOA shot in the field. Good enough for 200 yd, not sure about 300yd.

如果觉得地形可以用上你的Bipod,可以研究下后面能不能用Bipod Buddy，沙袋不可调且会不会太重了？总之祝你马到成功满载而归啦！

可以用sand sock. 这样重量和调整都能搞定。

Vortex diamond. 2-7x35 and 3-9x40. I checked parallax seemed ok. Could be shooter problem. Will try more 200-300 yd shooting. Cant get any federal gold match ammo to try. Just want to diagnose where the problem is.

Since I was using 16x. I shoot better than 9x.
I'm thinking buy the nikon buckmaster 6-18x40 or even higher magnification for target shooting.

9x is not very good when you target shoot 200 yard.
It's good for 100yard.

As you know, hunting is very different from shooting paper.
That's why I want to find a farm to shoot coyote to improve my skill.
I asked this question yesterday to the conservation police officer, he told me to try those farmer that has cattle or turkey. Offer help to farmer and they normally will let you hunt.

For hunting even 300 yard deer size game, 3-9x40 is good enough.
I personally prefer 4-16 from a reputable company.
Most like I will use low power. But I want high power to be available if I need it.

I shot 3moa using just red dot and sabot slug.
I shot the Winchester super x. 40 round. Most within 3moa and near the target Center so I'm confident.
Me and pl bought these ammo at very good price at gat guns.

That is true for known long distance shooting. For real hunting 3-9 or 2-7 is still the best choice because of field of view.

Even at 300yd, shoulder to stomach height of a deer is 18-24". A vital area of 12" still presents 4MOA or slightly over a mildot. That is plenty for aiming. For an elk, vital area is over 18"!

At shorter distance, wide field of view is much more important. 6-24 scope has about 17ft at 100yd. 3-9 has ~40ft, 2-7 has ~60ft. With 6-24 scope, you sacrifice too much in shorter distance encounter. I think your 4-16 scope is good combination for 100-600 yd hunting use.
