PORTLAND, Ind. - An eastern Indiana man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for firing gunshots that wounded an intruder who was fleeing his property.
A Jay County judge also ordered four months of home detention for 32-year-old David McLaughlin of Dunkirk during a court hearing Wednesday. A jury convicted McLaughlin in September of criminal recklessness for the April shooting.
The Star Press reports testimony indicated McLaughlin fired three gunshots at a man he believed had broken into his garage. One shot hit the 29-year-old man in the arm.
Judge Max Ludy said he found McLaughlin's firing of a gunshot in the direction of a neighbor's home especially reprehensible.
McLaughlin said he prayed no one was hit by his gunshots and that he never wanted to hold a gun again.
